Mastodons Unable to Climb Out of Early Hole Against Redbirds
12/22/2014 10:17:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORMAL, Ill. - The IPFW men's basketball team fell behind 9-1 early, and were unable to recover in a 68-43 loss to the Illinois State Redbirds on Monday evening.
Joe Reed scored a team-best and game-high-tying 12 points, while Isaiah McCray added 10 points. Michael Calder added seven points with Joe Edwards scoring six times.
Reed pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, with McCray grabbing six. McCray led the Mastodons in assists (2) and steals (3) while Reed and Brent Calhoun each had two blocked shots.
The Mastodons hit just 31 percent (13-of-42) from the field in the game - just the second time IPFW has hit fewer than 40 percent of its shots this season and 2-of-13 (15.4%) from behind the arc, the lowest since the team hit 2-of-15, 13.3% against South Dakota at home on January 17, 2013.
The Redbirds jumped out 9-1 through the first three minutes of the game; however, the Mastodons cut the gap to as few as three, and trailed by four at 14-10 after a running lay-in from Calhoun before the hosts scored six straight, and later opened a 9-0 run to push the margin to double-digits, as Illinois State took a 37-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Illinois State out-scored IPFW 15-4 to start the second half to push ahead by 31 points, before the Mastodons started fighting back; however, the Mastodons were only able to get within 20 in the loss to the Missouri Valley Conference foe.
Daishon Knight scored 12 points while Bobby Hunter added 11 for the Redbirds. Tony Wills scored eight points while pulling down eight rebounds.
IPFW takes six days for the Holidays, before returning for a December 28 meeting with the Judson Eagles for a 4:30 p.m. tip-off at the Gates Sports Center.
