SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - In the final Summit League contest ever played at the Sioux Falls Arena, the IPFW Mastodons fell in a heartbreaker to the North Dakota State Bison, 60-57.
The loss drops IPFW to 24-10, a new single-season school record for victories in a season. The loss does not end the season for the Mastodons; however, as the squad has accepted a bid into the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT). The first round of the tournament will be on March 18-19 with the second round to be played on March 21-22.
The Mastodons had seven players score at least seven points in the game, led by Luis Jacobo, Michael Kibiloski, and Pierre Bland who each scored nine. Steve Forbes and Isaiah McCray scored eight points apiece, while Joe Reed and Joe Edwards each picked up seven points.
Bland pulled down a game-high nine rebounds en route to being named to the Summit League All-Tournament Team, while dishing out five assists - also a game-high. Luis Jacobo - IPFW's second member of the All-Tournament Team - grabbed seven rebounds, as well as Reed, with IPFW out-rebounding North Dakota State 37-to-29.
The teams went back-and-forth early in the game, with every basket being answered by the opponent, and with the teams tied at 14, IPFW ran off an 8-2 run to lead by six halfway through the half.
The Mastodons would not relinquish their advantage, leading by as many as eight at 35-27 following a Kibiloski three-pointer with 1:42 to play, before the Bison made a three on their next possession to send IPFW Into the locker room with a 35-30 advantage.
The Bison kept chipping away at the Mastodon advantage, taking their first lead of the second half just over eight minutes into the period.
The teams once again traded key baskets, with the largest margin by either team the rest of the way sitting at four when NDSU grabbed a four-point advantage on an acrobatic three-point play by Summit League Player of the Year Taylor Braun.
The Mastodons cut the gap to three; however, a desperation halfcourter was off the mark, sealing the conference title for the Bison.
