FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In front of 1,466 loud Mastodon fans, the IPFW Mastodons came out victorious over the Akron Zips by a 97-91 final score, the program's first-ever post-season victory.
IPFW will next face off against the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday, March 22 in a 2 p.m. tip-off.
At 25-10, the Mastodons move into a tie for ninth place in Summit League history for total victories. The team has also scored the ninth-most points in a season in league history (2,679), as the team's 281 three-point field goals made rank seventh.
Seven players scored at least nine points for IPFW, led by 23 points from Luis Jacobo, while Steve Forbes scored 17, Mo Evans 15, and Pierre Bland 10. Isaiah McCray and Joe Edwards each fell a point shy of double figures with nine. Forbes pulled down a game-high seven rebounds, while Bland dished out seven assists.
The Mastodons are the last remaining men's team from the state of Indiana active in postseason play, and the squad will end the season with the most wins and best win percentage of any of the 10 NCAA Division I teams in the state.
IPFW hit 60 percent of its shots (33-of-55) for the game, and 54.5% (12-of-22) from long range. Akron was 36-of-56 from the floor (64.3%), but hit just 5-of-17 from long ragne (29.4%).
The entire first half was a back-and-forth battle with a dozen lead changes and seven tie scores, with the largest lead gained by either team being five points, when Akron led 22-17 with just over 11 minutes to play in the first half.
An 11-4 IPFW run put the Mastodons ahead, as the battle raged on for the remainder of the half, as an Evans three-pointer sent the 'Dons into the locker room with a one-point,47-46 lead.
There were eight more lead changes and seven ties in the second half; however, a 9-2 Mastodon run turned a one-point Akron lead into a six-point IPFW advantage, and the hosts never trailed again in the game.
The Margin reached double digits in the later stages of a 6-0 IPFW run, capped by a Forbes lay-in with 1:48 to play, as the Mastodons held on late for the 97-91 victory over the Zips.
Demetrius Treadwell scored a game-high 25 for Akron, hitting 11-of-12 shots from the field, while Quincy Diggs scored 23 and Nick Harney 12.
