Groninger Finishes Runner-Up, Mastodons Fourth At Championship

KELLER, Texas - After a remarkable second round comeback at The Summit League Championship, the IPFW men's golf team finished fourth, tying its best finish ever at the event with a three-day score of 917.
Jacob Groninger finished runner-up with a tournament total of 5-over-par 221, two strokes back of Tournament MVP Rob van de Vin of IUPUI. The second place finish by Groninger surpasses the previous best individual finish by a Mastodon in Drew Imel who took sixth in 2011.
Hosted at the par-72 Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club, the tournament was played at 6,953 yards. Denver won the team title with a score of 898.
The fourth place finish by the Mastodons matches their best performances from the 2011 and 2012 tournaments.
Groninger capped off his All-Tournament team performance with a final-round 3-over-par 75, which included birdies on Nos. 7 and 12. Groninger finished the tournament with 12 birdies, second most of any player.
Dan Wert and Carter Dornseif finished in a tie for 19th with a three-day total of 231, respectively. Wert carded a 79 in the final round while Dornseif shot a 75 to close out the week. Dornseif led IPFW on the day with five birdies, including being the only player in the field to birdie the 212-yard par-3 No. 14. Dornseif was also one of only two players who birdied the 433-yard par-4 No. 16 on the day.
Daniel Shepard tied for 29th overall with a tournament total 236, carding an 81 in the final round. Devin Jenkins finished the tournament with a score of 250 for the three rounds, shooting his best round of the week with a 79.
