SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
The Mastodons went unbeaten during exhibition play, using a come-from-behind effort to record a 1-1 draw with Northern Illinois at home and two late goals to take down UIC 2-0 in Chicago. Three different 'Dons accounted for the preseason goals, as freshman Taylor Pavlika netted a penalty kick in her first collegiate action against the Huskies and Andie Lazzerini and Brooke Bishir registered goals just four minutes apart to secure the win versus the Flames.
The IPFW offense welcomes back its two leading scorers from last year in forward Lazzerini (3G, 2A) and midfielder Gaby Romo (4G, 1A). With a year of experience under their belts, the sophomore tandem should key the attack for the Mastodons in 2014. The addition of Taylor Pavlika and the return of Bishir (2G) will also provide a boost on the offensive side of the ball.
Goalkeeper Sam Pavlika will be a force in the net as the last line of defense for the Blue and White. The junior has started every game in goal for IPFW over the last two years, playing over 3,500 minutes in her career. A member of the 2013 Summit League all-tournament team, Pavlika recorded a 1.80 goals-against-average and 103 saves a year ago.
The 'Dons are under the direction of first-year head coach Jason Burr, who will look to improve on last year's 6-12-1 record.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
The Cardinals finished fourth in the West Division of the Mid-American Conference in 2013. Their 6-4-2 record in league-play was sixth-best regardless of division, while the team's 11-7-4 overall record was good for fifth-best out of the league's 12 teams.
Ball State led the league in shots (356), tied for fourth in goals (29), and finished fifth in the conference in points (85) and assists (27) a season ago. The Cardinals will have their leading scorer back from 2013 in Victoria Jacobs. The senior scored five goals on the year and was honored as the MAC Defensive Player of the Week last September. She will be an important piece for Ball State on both sides of the ball.
The Cardinals will also have two key offensive players back out of a trio of goal-scorers that netted four goals apiece last season. Underclassmen Elaina Musleh and Kelsey Wendlandt return for Ball State, but the team will have to find a way to replace the leadership of now-departed Michelle Blok, who was a senior-captain in 2013.
While Ball State lost a 14-game starter in the net to graduation, probable 2014 starter Brooke Dennis is no stranger in goal for the Cardinals. The sophomore started eight games a year ago, recording a 0.95 goals-against average and 41 saves.
ALL-TIME SERIES
2014 marks the 11th all-time meeting between the two schools, who played every year from 2001 until 2007, taking a four-year hiatus before re-kindling the rivalry over the last three years. Ball State holds a strong 8-1-1 lead in the all-time series, but the Mastodons earned their first win over the Cardinals last year and will look to repeat that feat.
IPFW PICKED SIXTH
IPFW was picked sixth by the Summit League coaches, announced by the league office last week. The Mastodons earned 31 total poll points. Denver, the defending Summit League champion, was unanimously picked as the favorite to repeat, collecting 64 points and eight first-place votes. South Dakota State was picked second with 55 points and one first-place vote, followed by North Dakota State (48), Oral Roberts (42), and Western Illinois (34). Rounding out the field after IPFW was IUPUI ( 19), Omaha (17) and South Dakota (14).
NEXT UP
The Mastodons will host Detroit in their home-opener next Friday, August 29 at 5 p.m. at Hefner Soccer Complex. In the second game of the weekend, IPFW will face Northern Kentucky at 12 p.m. on Sunday, August 31, also at Hefner Field.
