The Mastodons open the tournament against first-year head coach Steve Florio's alma mater, Saint Francis (Pa.) at 12:30 p.m. on the 29th. The 'Dons then face former Summit League foe Oakland at 12:30 p.m. on August 30 before closing out against host Western Michigan that night at 7 p.m.
IPFW will look to make a run at the Summit League title after being picked to finish second in the Summit League Preseason Poll. The Mastodons return former Summit League Player of the Year and three-time All-League selection Emily Spencer along with 2014 All-League performer Hailie Ripley. The team returns 12 players from a season ago, including all six starters. Along with Spencer and Ripley, the 'Dons return Madison Spence, Kendall Wienkes, Sarah Heckman, and Este Stoffel, which combined to make 165 of 192 starts for IPFW.
Natasha Medic and Somer Johnson also return for the Mastodons, as both started matches last season. Other returners for the 'Dons include: Anna Wrede, Mallory Slyder, Olivia Hahn, and Jayna Colanese.
Newcomers to the squad include Costal Carolina transfer Monica Hall, along with freshmen Natalie Seiler, Lauren Hoffman, and Clair Marshall.
SEASON OPENERS
IPFW is 21-17 all-time in season-openers, and are currently riding a three-match winning streak. During that run, the Mastodons have defeated Loyola Chicago (2011), Murray State (2012), and Duquesne (2013). The last time IPFW lost a season-opener was on Aug. 27, 2010, when the 'Dons fell to Tulsa 3-0 as part of the IPFW Invitational.
The Mastodons will open their season on the road for the second time since 2008, and the first since 2011, when they participated in the Ball State Active Ankle Challenge. IPFW is 11-11 all-time when it opens the season on the road.
CLIMBING THE CAREER LADDER
Not only is Emily Spencer climbing the IPFW career rankings in kills, she also currently ranks 2nd among all active women's volleyball players with 1,504 kills. Her total trails only Edina Begic of UALR. Spencer was one just six juniors in the top 50 active kill leaders at the end of the 2013 season.
