YORKTOWN, Ind. - After the first round of the Cardinal Classic, IPFW women's golfer Allison Curtis sits in a tie for second after carding an even-par 72. As a team, the Mastodons are currently in 11th place with a score of 324.
IPFW sits fourstrokes out of eighth place trailing Grand Valley State (320), and Dayton and Northern Kentucky (321).
Hosted at The Players Club by Ball State, the par-72 course is being played at 6,164 yards. Eastern Michigan shot a 298 to hold a four-stroke lead over Western Michigan. Meghan McDougall of Ball State leads the 99-player field with a 3-under-par 69 on the day.
Curtis' 72 is the lowest round of her career, and ties an IPFW program record for the lowest round by a senior, set by Alison Rathsman on Oct. 7, 2008 during the second round of the Butler Fall Invitational. The mark also ranks as the third lowest round in Mastodon history. In her initial time around the The Players Club, Curtis carded 16 pars, one bogey, and a birdie on the par-5, 499-yard No. 15.
Playing in her second collegiate tournament, freshman Monica Dorner carded a 7-over-par 79, and sits in a tie for 34th place. Brenna Sherwood is tied for 74th after a round of 85 on the afternoon. Sydney Bailey recorded birdies on two par-3 holes, Nos. 5 and 7, en route to an 88 on the day, tying for 86th place. Ashton Taft rounded out the team scoring for the Mastodons with a 91 to tie for 94th in the standings.
Candi Keller, playing as an individual, carded a 92 for the day and is tied for 96th place.
The final round of the Cardinal Classic will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start on September 23 at The Players Club.
