Mastodons Sweep Jackrabbits In Summit League Opener

BROOKINGS, S.D. - In its Summit League opener, the IPFW women's volleyball team made quick work of South Dakota State, winning in straight sets 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-14).
IPFW, 7-8 overall, held the Jackrabbits to a season-low -.013 hitting percentage, while the 'Dons finished the match hitting .363.
The Mastodons were led by Emily Spencer with 13 kills, improving her school record to 36 consecutive matches in double-digits. She also moved into third place on the IPFW all-time kills list, surpassing Clara Schortgen, with 1,771 for her career. Spencer ended the night with a career-best .571 percentage and adding nine digs.
Somer Johnson also went for double figures with 11 kills to go along with five digs. Kendall Wienkes added nine kills and five digs in the match. Sarah Heckman made a team-high five blocks while ending the match with six kills.
Madison Spencer led the 'Dons with 21 assists as Mallory Slyder finished with 18 assists and nine digs.
The Jacks opened the first set with a 6-0 run, but IPFW answered with four consecutive points to tie the score early in the frame. From there it was all Mastodons as they closed out the set with a 19-7 advantage.
IPFW trailed early in the second set, but a 6-1 run by the Mastodons gave them the two-set advantage. The 'Dons never trailed in the final set, rolling to its third consecutive sweep of the Jackrabbits.
IPFW returns to Summit League action on October 3 as the Mastodons travel to Western Illinois for an 8 p.m. match.
