Mastodons Drop Heartbreaker on Last Second Free Throw

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's basketball team overcame a nine-point second half deficit to South Dakota State, but a free throw with 0.7 seconds ended the game in heartbreaking fashion for the Mastodons, falling 65-64.
Mur Hagerman led all scorers with a career-high 16 points and dished out three assists. Kamilah Carter went for double-digits off the bench with 13. Hillary Moore scored a season-high 12 points on a 6-of-6 night from the field, and made a career-high three blocks.
Haley Seibert contributed in nearly every category on the night, leading IPFW with six rebounds, five assists, and four steals to go along with eight points.
The Mastodons opened the scoring before SDSU answered with an 11-0 run, as IPFW fell behind early 14-4. The 'Dons chipped away at the Jackrabbit lead with seven straight points to trail 16-14 with 11 minutes to go.
South Dakota State pushed its lead back to 11 points, 34-23, at the 5:12 mark. IPFW fought its way back with seven straight points to cut the deficit to four with a minute left. Hagerman closed out the half with a pair of free throws as the Mastodons trailed 35-32 at the break. The 'Dons held SDSU without a field goal over the final 5:11 of the half.
The two sides traded baskets to open the second half as IPFW tied the game on a three by Hagerman at the 18:20 mark. The Jacks responded first with nine consecutive points to regain the lead, before the Mastodons went on a 6-0 run.
With 4:49 to play and the 'Dons down 62-55, IPFW used another 6-0 advantage capped off on a layup by Rachel Rinehart, tying the game 64-64 with 1:25 left.
As time ticked down and the score still tied 64-64, the Mastodons were called for a foul with 0.7 left on the game clock. South Dakota State's Macy Miller connected on the first free throw and missed the second, however time expired before IPFW was able to attempt a shot.
The 'Dons finished the night shooting 22-of-47 (46.8%) from the floor, 5-of-17 (29.4%) beyond the arc, and 15-of-17 (88.2%) at the free throw line.
IPFW will have a quick turnaround, hosting Oral Roberts on January 11 for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
