Mastodons Drop Road Game in Fargo
1/17/2015 8:15:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FARGO, N.D. - The IPFW women's basketball made a season-high 14 steals, but it wasn't enough as the team dropped a tough Summit League road game at North Dakota State 81-60. The Mastodon's record now stands at 7-11 overall on the season and 1-4 in league play.
Haley Seibert led the 'Dons with 18 points to go along with a career-high seven steals. Kamilah Carter came off the bench to score in double figures for the fourth consecutive game with 10 points and grabbed five rebounds. Keanna Gary finished with eight points while KeShyra McCarver had six points and six rebounds. Rachel Rinehart and Hillary Moore each added six rebounds on the night.
After a 5-0 Bison run gave them an early lead, IPFW answered with a 7-0 run at the 12:28 mark to take a 16-13 advantage. It would be a short-lived lead for the Mastodons, as NDSU responded with 10 consecutive points to retake the lead for good. A Gary layup with 19 second left pulled the 'Dons to within 10, but North Dakota State made a pair of free throws with 5.3 second left as IPFW trailed 40-28 at the break.
In the second half, the Mastodons cut the deficit to 11 points on three different occasions, but were unable to make a run to close the gap to single-digits over the final 20 minutes. Each side connected on 13 second-half field goals, however the Bison made 13 free throws compared to five for IPFW.
For the night, the 'Dons shot 24-of-74 (32.4%) from the floor, 2-of-23 (8.7%) on three's, and 10-of-19 (52.6%) at the free throw line.
The seven steals by Seibert were the most by a Mastodon since Kayla Drake made 10 at South Dakota State on January 22, 2011.
IPFW returns to action in the Gates Center on January 22 to host Summit League leader South Dakota at 7 p.m.
