Mastodons Surrender Second Half Lead In Summit League Opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's basketball team was unable to hang on to a 14-point second half lead, as the Mastodons drop their Summit League opener to Western Illinois 98-85.
Rachel Rinehart led all players with a career-high 31 points on 12-of-20 shooting. She also tied a career-high with eight assists. Haley Seibert connected on 6-of-12 from downtown to finish her night with 22 points. Keanna Gary led the Mastodons with seven rebounds to go along with nine points.
As Western Illinois led in the opening minutes, the Mastodons fought back with an 11-2 run to take an 8-point lead 19-11 with 14:35 to play in the half. Leading by five, 32-27, the 'Dons scored eight straight points to force the Leathernecks into a timeout, capped off by Seibert connecting on consecutive three-pointers. WIU cut into the IPFW lead with a 13-4 advantage before Kamilah Carter knocked down a three as time expired, giving the Mastodons a 47-40 lead at halftime.
The 'Dons opened the second half with a 7-0 advantage, while keeping the Leathernecks off the scoreboard for six possessions, to lead 54-40. Western Illinois countered with a 14-4 stretch, trimming the Mastodon lead to four, 58-54. The Leathernecks scored eight consecutive points to give them a 66-65 lead with 10:13 to play.
Both sides continued to battle as the teams traded seven lead changes in a span of four minutes. With the score tied 73-73, a 10-0 Western Illinois run put IPFW in its largest deficit of the night. The 'Dons were unable to cut into the Leatherneck lead down the stretch, as WIU made 10 free throws in the final 1:56.
For the game, the Mastodons shot 32-of-71 (45.1%) from the field, 7-of-23 (30.4%) beyond the arc, and 14-of-18 (77.8%) at the charity stripe.
IPFW travels to IUPUI on January 4 for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
