FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In front of a Gates Athletic Center-capacity crowd of 1,839, the Mastodons put six players into double-figure scoring, led by 16 points from Max Landis and near-double-double efforts from Mo Evans and Steve Forbes in a 77-71 win over North Dakota State on Saturday evening.
Landis went 3-of-6 from the field and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe for IPFW (9-11, 2-5 Summit League), while Isaiah McCray scored 14 points, Evans 13, Forbes and Joe Reed 12, and Joe Edwards 10. It was the first time since the Mastodons also put six in double figures against IUPUI on February 22 a season earlier.
Evans and Forbes each pulled down eight rebounds, as the Mastodons out-rebounded the Bison - the league's top rebounding team - 34-to-28. Landis dished out five assists, with IPFW sporting a 13-to-7 assist-to-turnover ratio for the game.
The teams traded baskets to start the game, as NDSU's Lawrence Alexander scores six of the team's first eight points, pushing the Bison to an 8-4 lead through three minutes of the game. The Bison kept their lead, and led by two with 13:29 to play before IPFW ran off eight straight points - one of three 8-0 IPFW runs in the game. The opening 8-0 run was capped off by six straight points from Joe Reed who drained a three before converting on a three-point play the next time down the court.
The 8-0 run pushed IPFW head by six, and the Mastodons never trailed again in the win. NDSU fought back and closed the gap to two following Alexander's third three-pointer of the first half; however, Steve Forbes scored four straight points to end the first half and send the 'Dons into the locker room with a 35-29 advantage.
Forbes hit a basket in the first possession, and two McCray free throws put IPFW ahead 39-29 to close out the team's second 8-0 run. After an A.J. Jacobson three-pointer, IPFW ran off eight more points in a row, capped by an Isaiah McCray dunk, and closing a 16-2 IPFW run to put the Mastodons ahead 47-32, the team's largest lead in the contest.
North Dakota State followed with 10 in a row to push the margin back to single digits, and remained in single digits the rest of the way. The Bison got as close as three; however, IPFW then out-scored NDSU 10-4 over the next three minutes to push ahead by nine with just under a minute to play, and held on late for the six-point victory.
IPFW made 27-of-53 shots from the field (50.9%), while hitting on 6-of-17 (35.3%) from long range, and 17-of-24 (70.8%) from the charity stripe. NDSU hit just under 50 percent from the field (26-of-54/48.1%) and 10-of-24 (41.7%) from long range.
The Mastodons return to action on Thursday, January 29, when the team takes on the Coyotes of South Dakota in an 8 p.m. tip-off at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion, South Dakota.
