Mastodons Drop Homecoming Game to Pioneers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's basketball team was unable to hang on to a six-point halftime lead as the Mastodons fell to Denver, 82-75. The loss puts IPFW's record at 7-13 on the season and 1-6 in Summit League play.
Rachel Rinehart had a game-high 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting to lead the 'Dons. Haley Seibert went for 17 points and added a team-high five assists. Keanna Gary just missed a double-double, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds. Kamilah Carter added 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists off the bench.
The two sides traded baskets to open the game before a 6-0 run by the Pioneers gave them an early 10-8 lead. The Mastodons topped that with a 7-0 stretch of their own to regain the lead with 14:19 left in the half. Rinehart dropped her second three-pointer of the game at the 10:23 mark as IPFW pushed its lead to seven at 21-14.
Later, with the 'Dons still leading by seven, Denver scored eight consecutive points to take a one-point lead 31-30. Rinehart countered for the Mastodons with another triple and followed it by converting on the and-one opportunity. IPFW closed out the half on an 11-4 advantage to lead the Pioneers 41-35 at the break.
Denver opened the second half with an 11-3 run to take a 46-44 lead at the 17:06 mark. Trailing by three with 11:53 left, the Mastodons scored eight consecutive points to take back the lead 59-54. The Pioneers answered with 12 straight points with 4:43 to play in the game and leading 68-61.
IPFW responded with six straight points, including a three by Seibert, to pull the 'Dons to within one, 68-67. After both teams connected from downtown, Denver scored nine straight points over a 1:05 span, as the Mastodons were unable to comeback in the final minute.
For the game, the 'Dons made 28-of-61 (45.9%) shots, 10-of-22 (45.5%) from long range, and 9-of-20 (45%) at the free throw line.
IPFW returns to action on January 29 when it hosts Omaha for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
