Women's Volleyball Drops Five-Set Pink Out Match Thriller

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's volleyball team came up just short of a win over IUPUI in its annual Pink Out match to support breast cancer research, falling 3-2 (21-25, 25-22, 26-28, 25-23, 15-12).
Somer Johnson, Nicole Rightnowar, and Madison Jaqua all had double-doubles for the Mastodons. Johnson led the team with a match-high 25 kills and had a career-high 24 digs, making it her 12th double-double of the season. Rightnowar finished with 17 kills and 12 digs for her fourth career double-double. Rightnowar also took a career-high 59 total attempts at the net.
Madison Jaqua dished out a career-high 68 assists, with 22 coming in the third set alone. Her 68 assists rank sixth most in a Division I match this season. She also earned her 10th double-double of the season, finishing with 13 digs.
Natalie Seiler capped off her night with a career-high 14 kills. Defensively, Olivia Hahn led the 'Dons with a match-high 25 digs and a team-high two aces. Este Stoffel finished with a season-high 12 digs. Sarah Heckman led the team with five blocks, moving into a tie with Linda Shank for 18th all-time in program history with 278 for her career.
IPFW was victorious in the first set beating IUPUI 25-21. The 'Dons led most of the first set after getting off to a rocky start. IUPUI tied the match at 18-18, but IPFW pulled through to win the first set.
The second set went to IUPUI as the Jaguars took the lead early on and were not willing to let up. With the Jags leading 17-11 midway through the set, IPFW fought to make a comeback, but came up short.
The Mastodons and Jaguars fought hard for the third set. The entire set was close, with neither opponent getting more than a three-point lead. The teams were tied on 12 separate occasions and exchanged six leads, but IPFW edged out IUPUI to take the set.
The 'Dons started out well in the fourth frame with a five-point lead midway through at 19-14. IUPUI scored six unanswered points to turn the tables and force the decisive fifth set.
The Jags opened the scoring in the final set with the first two points. IPFW responded with a 6-0 run to take a 7-4 lead on back-to-back kills from Rightnowar. The 'Dons were unable to maintain the lead as IUPUI closed out the match scoring eight of the final 10 points.
IPFW returns to the court to host Oral Roberts on October 30 for Law Enforcement Appreciation Night. The match begins at 7 p.m. with members of law enforcement receiving a complimentary ticket to the match while family and friends can purchase addition tickets for $3.
