Mastodons Drop Weekend Opener to Bison

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's volleyball team dropped its first match of a weekend home stand to North Dakota State 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-19).
Somer Johnson led the offensive attack for the Mastodons with 11 kills. Nicole Rightnowar added seven kills while Natalie Seiler and Lauren Hoffman had five, respectively. Madison Jaqua directed the 'Dons with 12 assists as Clair Marshall dished out 10.
Defensively, Olivia Hahn finished with a team-high 16 digs as Rightnowar ended the night with nine. Seiler capped off her night with a match-high four blocks while Taeja Davis put down a pair of solo blocks.
The Mastodons scored an early lead in the first set with back-to-back kills from Johnson to open the match. With IPFW leading by two, North Dakota State scored four consecutive points to take a 7-5 lead. The 'Dons closed the gap to 9-8, but a 6-0 Bison run put them ahead for good.
NDSU began the second set on a 7-1 run, as the Mastodons were unable to overcome the early deficit. In set three, the two sides exchanged points to begin the frame. The Bison scored four straight before the 'Dons countered with a three-point run to tie the score 6-6. North Dakota State answered with three straight, and scored 14 of the next 19 points to take the set and the match.
IPFW returns to action tomorrow night, October 10, to take on South Dakota State at 7 p.m.
