Gary Grabs 15 Rebounds as Mastodons Drop Road Game
12/20/2015 10:29:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - IPFW's Keanna Gary pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds but it was not enough as the women's basketball team dropped its road game to Fairfield 74-62.
Gary's 15 boards are the most by a Mastodon since Stefanie Mauk pulled down 15 against Rochester on Dec. 22, 2012. They are also the most by an IPFW player against a Division I opponent in over a decade, since Verea Bibbs had 15 versus Green Bay on Feb. 14, 2004. The 15 rebounds also put Gary tied for third on the list for the most by a sophomore and are the most since Bibbs grabbed 15 against UALR on Dec. 12, 2002.
Leading the offense for the 'Dons was Kamilah Carter with 21 points while Josie Fisher added 11. KeShyra McCarver led the way with three assists as Gary had a team-high two steals.
McCarver dropped a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the game for the Mastodons, but that would be the only lead for IPFW in the game. Fairfield responded with a 15-2 run in a five-minute span. The second quarter saw both teams play rigorous defense, with the two sides combining for 23 points as the 'Dons trailed 37-25 at halftime.
IPFW slowly chipped away at the Stags lead, scoring seven of the first nine points in the third quarter. Trailing by 10 with 4:59 to play in the period, the 'Dons went on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to three, on a triple from Carter.
Heading into the fourth down six, Carter capped a Mastodon 8-2 run by knocking down her fourth triple of the afternoon to pull her team to within two, 53-51 with 7:09 to go. Fairfield followed with a 7-0 swing that IPFW was unable to come back from down the stretch.
On the day the 'Dons converted on 19-of-57 (33.3%) of their field goal attempts, 6-of-16 (37.5%) from downtown, and 18-of-21 at the charity stripe.
IPFW continues its road trip traveling to former Summit League rival Oakland on December 22 for a noon start.
