Heartbreaking Finish As Mastodons Fall in Final Seconds

DETROIT - An eight-point fourth quarter lead slipped away from the IPFW women's basketball team as Detroit sank a pair of free throws with 3.0 seconds left, as the Mastodons fell 64-63.
Kamilah Carter led the 'Dons with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting. Josie Fisher and Courtney Ogle also finished in double figures with 12 and 10, respectively. Keanna Gary nearly came away with a double-double, finishing with a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with eight points. Rachel Rinehart dished out a team-high six assists while Fisher picked off a game-high three steals.
The Titans took the early lead, knocking down three 3-pointers to being the game. Trailing by five, 22-17, the Mastodon offense caught fire, scoring 11 consecutive points. Carter scored eight straight points during the stretch as Ogle capped off the first half, and a 13-1 IPFW run, with a jumper to give the 'Dons a 30-23 lead at halftime.
The final two quarters saw seven ties and seven lead changes. Detroit began the second half on a 12-2 advantage, as it went up 35-32 with 3:55 to go. IPFW closed out the third and began the fourth with a 7-0 run, taking its largest lead of the game 49-41. The Titans came back, scoring nine straight points to regain the lead.
Back-to-back jumpers in the key by Fisher put the Mastodons back in front. Ogle knocked down a triple with 2:59 to go the Mastodons held a 63-57 advantage. Detroit scored the final seven points of the game, including a pair of free throws by Brianne Cohen with 3.0 seconds left, to hang a tough loss on the 'Dons.
On the night, the Mastodons hit 24-of-74 (32.4%) from the field, 9-of-30 (30%) from beyond the arc, and 6-of-8 (75%) at the free throw line.
IPFW returns home for a game against Chicago State on December 12 at noon as part of a doubleheader with the men's team at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
