FARGO, N.D. - The IPFW men's basketball team saw its seven-game win streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon in a thrilling 66-62 battle with the North Dakota State Bison.
Joe Edwards scored a career-high 20 points, hitting 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-7 from long range, while Max Landis scored 13, Steve Forbes 12, and Mo Evans 10. Landis and Isaiah McCray each pulled down a team-best five rebounds, as Landis dished out six assists, one off of his career-best.
As a team the Mastodons hit 20-of-42 shots (47.6 percent) from the floor, 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from long range, and 87.5 percent (14-16) from the charity stripe. North Dakota State, which stretched its home-court win streak to 25 games, hit 46.7 percent (21-45) from the floor and 11-of-21 from long range, including going 8-of-12 in the first half.
The Bison hit three of four three-pointers to start the game, and led by eight six minutes into the contest following Lawrence Alexander's second triple of the contest.
Trailing by seven, IPFW mounted a comeback, scoring seven straight on a three-pointer by Edwards, and lay-ins from Landis and Forbes. The Bison scored four straight, before an Edwards 18-footer and a Landis three gave IPFW its first lead of the game at 24-23. NDSU countered with an 11-1 run to push ahead by as many as nine, before the Mastodons closed the first half by scoring four straight, including three free throws from Landis with 0.5 seconds on the clock.
North Dakota State pushed its lead to as many as six with 13:21 to play, before IPFW rattled off a 10-1 run to push its lead to three at 45-42 with 10:21 to play in the game. The Bison answered with a 10-0 run, and led by as many as nine with 3:57 to play in the game.
The tough Mastodon group would not go down without a fight, closing to within three on an Edwards four-point play and by two following Edwards' fourth and final three-point basket, but the Bison iced the game by making all 10 of their free throws in the final four minutes of the game to hold on for the four-point win.
Alexander, playing in his final home game, scored a game-high 27 points, while A.J. Jacobson scored 16 and Carlin Dupree 11, six coming on free throws.
The Mastodons return to action on Thursday, February 26 when the team hosts the Omaha Mavericks in a 7 p.m. tip-off at the Gates Sports Center.
