Second Half Cold Spell Drops Mastodons Against Omaha

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons had an eight and a half minute second-half stretch without a field goal, as the Mavericks opened a 21-4 run to turn an 11-point IPFW lead into a six-point Omaha advantage, as the Mavericks held on late for a 73-67 win.
IPFW put five players in double-figure scoring, led by 13 points from both Max Landis and Steve Forbes, while Mo Evans and Michael Calder each scored 11, with Joe Edwards chipping in 10. Joe Reed pulled down six rebounds, while Landis and Forbes each grabbed five. Evans dished out a game-high six assists, while Landis handed out five scores.
IPFW hit 42.6 percent of its shots for the game (23-of-54), and 10-of-26 (38.5 percent) from long range, while Omaha hit 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the field, and 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from beyond the arc.
Omaha scored the first six points of the game before IPFW ran off 10 straight points, capped by a Landis three-pointer, putting the Mastodons ahead by four. Omaha led two times in the remainder of the first half, both by one point, before IPFW pushed ahead, and behind a Calder 5-0 run, led by 10 with 29 seconds to play in the first half. Omaha cut the halftime gap to eight with a basket at the buzzer, sending IPFW into the locker room with a 36-28 advantage.
IPFW opened the second half by out-scoring the Mavericks by four through the first five minutes, leading by 11 with 14:53 to play before the cold spell set in for the Mastodons.
The hosts missed each of their next seven field goal attempts, while Omaha went 6-for-10 from the field and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe, turning the 10-point advantage into a three-point deficit during a 14-0 run.
IPFW trailed by as many as eight, as IPFW was able to close the gap to two at the buzzer in the game.
Omaha was led in scoring by Tre'Shawn Thurman who scored a game-high 14 points, while CJ Carter scored 12, and 11 from Kyler Erickson and Mike Rostampour.
The Mastodons close out the 2014-15 regular season on Saturday evening when IPFW hosts the Western Illinois Leathernecks in a 7 p.m. tip-off at the Gates Sports Center.
