Mastodons Top League Leader for Fourth Straight Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's basketball team led for over 34 minutes of game-play time, winning its fourth straight game with an 84-74 win over Summit League leader South Dakota State on Thursday evening.
The Mastodons - who now have the longest active win streak in the Summit League - last fell on January 21 at South Dakota State. The team scored 52 second-half points, and never trailed in the second stanza.
Steve Forbes scored 23 points, hitting 9-of-12 shots from the field and pulling down a team-best six rebounds. Max Landis scored an IPFW-career-high 19 points, going 5-of-8 from the field and making all seven of his charity stripe tries. Isaiah McCray drained four three-point baskets and a pair of free throws for 14 points, with Joe Edwards scoring a dozen points.
IPFW dished out 18 assists for the game against just nine turnovers, with Mo Evans dishing out five helpers and McCray four in the win.
IPFW jumped ahead with a McCray three-pointer on the first possession of the game, and kept the lead through the first 10 minutes of the game. South Dakota State, trailing by three at 13-10, ran off seven straight points to take its biggest lead of the game at 17-13 on the first of three Deondre Parks three-point baskets with 8:34 to play in the first half.
Jure Gunjina hit a driving lay-in, and McCray hit a second three-pointer to put the Mastodons ahead again, before the visiting Jackrabbits took another lead, this time at 25-23 on Parks' second three-point basket - the last South Dakota State lead in the game.
Trailing by two, the Mastodons ran off seven consecutive points, capped by an Edwards lay-in with 1:59 to play in the half, taking a 30-25 lead, and held a four-point, 32-28 lead at halftime.
The Mastodons pushed their lead to seven, three minutes into the second half before an 8-1 SDSU run tied the game at 42, the final tie score of the contest. An IPFW 9-2 run ,- capped by back-to-back three-pointers from Michael Calder - followed to put the hosts ahead by seven at 51-44.,
IPFW stretched its lead to 11 on the heels of a 10-2 streak; however, the Jackrabbits would not go away, twice climbing to within six, as late as a half-minute left on the clock. The Mastodons iced the game, converting on its final 10 free throw tries in the final minute and a half to pull away in the 84-74 IPFW win.
The hosts hit half of its 52 shots in the game, including shooting 58.3 percent (14-of-24) in the second half, 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) from long range. South Dakota State out-rebounded the Mastodons 32-of-29, while hitting 49.1 percent (28-of-57) of its shots for the game.
Parks scored a game-high 24 points, hitting 6-of-9 from long range, while Jake Bittle scored 18 and Cody Larson 16.
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday evening when the team plays host to the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in a 7 p.m. tip-off at the Gates Sports Center.
