Second Half Comeback Not Enough in Tournament Loss
3/8/2015 10:37:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The IPFW men's basketball team trailed by as many as 21 points, and by 20 in the second half to the South Dakota Coyotes, before the Mastodons rallied back, cutting the gap to as few as five points with just over a minute remaining, but unable to get any closer in the 82-73 South Dakota victory in the second day of quarterfinals in the 2015 Summit League Tournament.
Joe Edwards scored a team-high 16 points - including the 1,000th of his career - while Steve Forbes and Max Landis scored 14, Mo Evans 13, and Isaiah McCray nine.
McCray led the team with eight rebounds and six assists, as Forbes and Edwards each grabbed six rebounds. As a team IPFW gave out 13 assists and committed just four turnovers, the first time committing less than five turnovers since December of 2012.
The teams traded baskets early in the game, with IPFW holding a 10-8 lead four and a half minutes into the game; however, the Coyotes opened a 24-5 run to push ahead by 19 at 32-13, a stretch in which USD hit 11-of-14 shots.
The first-half margin reached as many as 21, including at the halftime break where USD held a 44-23 advantage.
South Dakota held a 20-point advantage two minutes into the second period before IPFW ran off 10 consecutive points to cut the deficit in half. The Mastodons were able to climb to within nine points on an Evans lay-in.
USD answered having its lead cut to single digits with a 10-0 run of its own, leading by 19 with 6:50 to play, but the feisty IPFW squad would not give up, and used a 9-0 run to climb to within six with 1:42 to play.
The margin was cut to as few as five after a pair of Joe Edwards free throws, but the Mastodons could get no closer, as the Coyotes iced the game at the free throw line in an 83-72 IPFW loss.
The Mastodons hit 25-of-60 from the field (41.7 percent) and 9-of-27 from long range - 33.3 percent. South Dakota went 26-of-49 (53.1 percent) from the field and 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from long range.
