IPFW Wins Sixth-Straight, Defeats South Dakota 85-65

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Junior Mo Evans/Indianapolis scored a game-high 20 points to lead IPFW to an 85-65 men's college basketball Summit League victory past the University of South Dakota on Wednesday night at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne. Evans was 4-9 on three-point field goals to lead four players in double-figure scoring, while redshirt-junior Brent Calhoun/Indianapolis added a career-high 15 points for the host Mastodons (13-4, 2-0 Summit League), who continue with their finest Division I start to a season with their sixth consecutive victory. Shy McClelland led the visiting Coyotes (9-8, 1-2 Summit League) with 19 points. IPFW, ranked No. 25 in this week's The CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, will play its first Summit League game on the road at the University of Denver on Saturday, January 9, at 6 p.m. ET in Colorado.
IPFW jumped out to a quick 6-2 advantage at 17:54 as Calhoun scored the team's first three baskets inside. It was an 18-11 lead for the Mastodons at 13:07 after another basket down low by Calhoun that prompted a South Dakota timeout. IPFW increased the lead to 26-15 with 10:01 on the clock following consecutive baskets from redshirt-freshman John Konchar/Chicago, Ill., including an offensive rebound tip-in. The Coyotes used an 11-0 run to tie the contest at 26-26 with 5:27 left, but Evans responded with his third three-pointer of the half to make it 29-26 at 5:08. IPFW outscored the Coyotes 18-7 over the rest of the half to lead 47-33 at the intermission, its largest first-half advantage, getting a pair of late three-pointers from redshirt-senior Max Landis/Indianapolis. Evans finished the half with 13 points, while Calhoun, Konchar and Landis each scored eight.
IPFW continued its momentum to start the second half, outscoring USD 13-6 to lead 60-39 at 15:53, getting points from four different players. The Mastodons led 64-43 at 13:41 after a steal and breakaway one-handed slam dunk by Evans, and it was 70-45 with 11:48 remaining after an old fashioned three-point play inside by Calhoun. IPFW took its largest lead at 74-45 with 9:07 on the clock via a layup by Landis, assisted by Evans. The Mastodons matched that 29-point margin at 81-52 with 5:15 to play after a three-pointer from junior DeAngelo Stewart/Detroit, Mich. The hosts were able to empty their bench and play everyone available over the final minutes toward the final buzzer, getting two late baskets inside by redshirt-junior Andrew Poulter/New Braunfels, Texas.

Stewart had eight points and five rebounds, off the bench. IPFW shot 52% (33-63) from the field, including 35% (9-26) on three-pointers and 63% (10-16) at the line. The Mastodons won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding USD, 43-30, and had a 44-28 advantage in points scored in the paint, a 16-7 advantage in second chance points and a 14-0 advantage in fast break points.
McClelland led South Dakota with his 19 points, the only Coyote in double-figure scoring. USD shot 41% (26-63) from the field, including 41% (7-17) on three-pointers and 50% (6-12) at the line.
IPFW is now 13-4 overall for its best start to a season as a Division I program (2001-02). The six-straight wins match the second-best winning streak the program's DI history (7). The Mastodons' all-time best start is 11-0, accomplished during 1988-89 as a Division II member.
