Women's Volleyball Earns Comeback Victory Over NDSU
10/8/2016 12:00:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
FARGO, N.D. - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team used an epic comeback on the road to begin its Summit League season 4-0 for the first time in program history with a 3-2 (23-25, 16-25, 25-14, 25-19, 15-10) victory over North Dakota State.
Three Mastodons recorded a double-double in the match led by Nicole Rightnowar with a match-high 20 kills to go along with a career-high 19 digs. Somer Johnson finished with 16 kills and 12 digs, while Madison Jaqua had a match-high 53 assists and 16 digs.
Lauren Hoffman and Natalie Seiler each finished in double-digit kills with 14 and 13, respectively. Seiler also put down a match-high six blocks, including a career-high five solo blocks. Her five solo blocks are the most by a Mastodon since Claire Jackson also had five against Texas Pan American on Sept. 22, 2006. Olivia Hahn went for 36 digs in the match, which ranks ninth all-time in team history.
Fort Wayne led through most of the first set before a late five-point swing gave the Bison the frame. NDSU led from the start of set number two as the Mastodons were in a hole trailing 2-0.
The 'Dons came out in the third set with avenges, scoring seven straight points to lead 9-3 and never look back. The Mastodons trailed early in the fourth set, but another 7-0 run pushed them back into the lead. With the score tied 17-17, Fort Wayne used a six-point swing to force the final frame.
In the decisive fifth set, the Mastodons fell behind early, but much like the previous two sets, the 'Dons refused the give in. A four-point run tied the set before three consecutive points gave Fort Wayne the lead for good. The Mastodons closed out the match on a 4-1 advantage to remain undefeated in the Summit League.
Fort Wayne returns to the court for a battle of the only undefeated teams remaining in the league when the 'Dons face South Dakota on Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. ET.
