VERMILLION, S.D. - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped its first Summit League match of the season as the Mastodons fell at South Dakota 3-2 (16-25, 26-28, 26-24, 25-22, 15-8).
Nicole Rightnowar led the 'Dons with a match-high 20 kills and three aces to go along with a career- and team-high 22 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Somer Johnson earned her 23rd career double-double with 13 kills and 20 digs. Madison Jaqua also earned a double-double, her sixth of the year, with a match-high 56 assists and added 17 digs.
Lauren Hoffman finished with 15 kills and four blocks while Natalie Seiler added eight kills and four blocks. Olivia Hahn had 18 digs while Natasha Medic also tied for a team-high with four blocks.
After trailing early in the first, the Mastodons led 11-10 before using a 5-1 swing to extend its lead and take the opening set. Things looked bleak for the 'Dons in the second set. With Fort Wayne trailing 24-21, the Mastodons fought off three set points and scored the final three points to take the frame.
Fort Wayne looked to use its magic again in the third set, holding off the Coyotes twice at set point, but South Dakota was able to break a 24-24 tie and win the final two points. The Mastodons took a late lead in the fourth set, but the Yotes scored the last five points to force a fifth set.
A six-point run by South Dakota early in the fifth was too much for the Mastodons to overcame as they dropped the set and the match.
Fort Wayne returns home to host South Dakota State on Oct. 14 for a 7 p.m. match.
