Men's Golf Ties Best Finish at Summit League Championship

NEWTON, Kan. - The IPFW men's golf team tied its best finish at the Summit League Championship as the Mastodons placed fourth with a final-round score of 290 and a total score of 896.
Hosted at the par-72 Sand Creek Station Golf Club, the course was played at 6,733 yards. South Dakota State claimed the team title with a 54-hole score of 878. Kevin Gordon of Omaha jumped six spots on the final day to win the individual title, shooting a three-day score of even-par 216.
The 'Dons finished seven strokes back of second place Omaha and five behind third place Western Illinois.
Zach Schroeder was the top finisher for the Mastodons, shooting a 1-over-par 73 on the final day to finish tied for seventh to end the tournament at 5-over-par 221. Schroeder ended his season by recording a birdie on two of his final three holes.
Josh Keating jumped 12 spots on the final day, the second best improvement in the field, shooting a 3-under-par 69 to end the week tied for ninth at 222. Keating started slow but caught fire after birdieing the par-4 No. 9, he went on to birdie six of his final 10 holes, including four straight on Nos. 13-16. Keating becomes just the third IPFW golfer to shoot a 69 or lower at a par-72 Summit League Championship, joining current teammate Jacob Groninger, along with former Mastodon Drew Imel.
Devin Jenkins stood alone in 23rd place with a 74 on the round and a 227 for the championship. Jenkins was the second Mastodon on the week (Schroeder) to eagle a hole, recording it on the par-5, 552-yard No. 4. One shot back in a tie for 24th was Groninger with a 228 overall and a 74 on the day. Dan Wert rounded out the team with a final-day 75 to finish tied for 29th at 232 for the tournament.
Groninger ends his IPFW career with a 75.26 scoring average, third best in program history. Additionally, his 74.73 average on the year ranks fourth in a single season. Schroeder's season average of 75.03 is seventh all-time for a Mastodon golfer.
