Mastodons Sweep Defending Champion Denver

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team continued to roll through Summit League play as the Mastodons swept defending league champion Denver 3-0 (27-25, 27-25, 25-8).
Lauren Hoffman led the 'Dons with 12 kills on the night. Nicole Rightnowar and Somer Johnson each added nine kills. Rightnowar also finished with 11 digs and a pair of aces while Johnson had nine digs. Madison Jaqua led the team with 31 assist while Olivia Hahn added 10 digs. Natalie Seiler finished the night with a match-high five blocks (three solo) and three aces.
The opening set was a back-and-forth affair as the teams exchanged four leads and 14 ties. The Mastodons trailed 20-18 but a 5-2 run put them back into the lead. Later, with the score tied 25-25, the 'Dons got a kill from Rightnowar and finished off the set with a solo block from Seiler.
The Mastodons led early in the second and refused to relinquish the lead. Again with the score tied 25-25, Fort Wayne scored off a Denver service error before Hoffman and Natasha Medic finished it off with a block. Everything was coming up 'Dons to begin the third set as the squad jumped out to an 11-1 lead and never looked back to earn the sweep. The Mastodons held the Pioneers to a season-low eight points in the final set, including a season-low five kills and a -.107 hitting percentage.
Fort Wayne has the rest of the weekend off before heading to North Dakota State for a match on October 7 at 8 p.m. ET.
