Crowe Has Career Afternoon as Mastodons Fall
10/1/2017 5:06:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Katie Crowe earned a double-double with a career-high 24 kills while Nicole Rightnowar also added a double-double, but it was not enough as the Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker to Omaha 3-2 (23-25, 28-26, 25-17, 17-25, 16-14).
Crowe's double-double was her fifth of the season as she had 17 digs to go along with her match-high 24 kills and four aces. Rightnowar finished with 15 kills and a match-high 20 digs for her fifth straight double-double. Natalie Seiler added 10 kills to go along with a team-high five blocks.
Madison Jaqua earned a match-high 52 assists. Defensively, Julia Wayer had 16 digs, Elizabeth Britner had 12 and Victoria Mills finished with 11.
The opening set was as close as they come with the two sides fighting through 19 ties and 12 lead changes. Neither team led by more than two points the entire set, but in the end, it was the Mastodons closing it out with a kill from Rightnowar and a pair of Omaha errors. It was another close set in the second, this time with 18 ties and seven lead changes. Tied 26-26, the Mavericks scored on a pair of kills to tie the match.
The 'Dons led 6-5 in the third set before a 4-0 run by UNO put them in the lead for good. The Mastodons turned the tables on Omaha in the fourth. Trailing 4-3, Fort Wayne used a 9-3 run to take the lead and force a fifth set.
Much like the entire match, the fifth set was back-and-forth with 11 ties and three lead changes the 'Dons had match point at 14-13, but three errors to end the match gave Omaha the victory.
For the match, the Mastodons and Mavericks exchanged 30 leads and had 57 tie scores, both season-highs for the 'Dons.
Fort Wayne returns to action when it hosts North Dakota State Friday, October 6 at 7 p.m.
