ELMHURST, Ill. – Two Mastodon student-athletes from the Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) represented Fort Wayne Athletics at the annual Summit League meeting July 27-29 in Elmhurst, Illinois.
President Damian Helm and Public Relations Coordinator Victoria Mills of SALT were among 16 Summit League student-athletes representing their respective schools at the meeting. Assistant Commissioner of Sports and Championships Ricky Babcock and Assistant Commissioner for Compliance and Governance Eryn Cook led the student-athletes in meetings for the weekend.
The three-day meeting started with a discussion regarding the championship experience for student-athletes. Next, the group reviewed the National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Meeting held earlier in the summer.
The second day, student-athletes traveled to the Ray Graham Association, a nonprofit organization that provides services and support for nearly 2,500 children and adults with disabilities. The student-athletes participated in a variety of intramural games with the members.
"I had such an amazing experience at the Ray Graham Association," said Mills. "It was fun to be able to volunteer at a great organization and meet and connect with a lot of the people that utilize the facility."
On the final day, members discussed marketing, student-athlete development, and different programs and structures of the other SAAC programs in the league.
"It was a great experience spending the three days with leaders from the other Summit League schools," said Helm. "It was nice to collaborate and get some ideas to improve SALT here at Fort Wayne, as well as sharing our input as to what would be best for student-athletes at Fort Wayne in regards to various issues within the Summit League."
