FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team won its season-opener in comeback fashion as the Mastodons defeated Quinnipiac 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 25-16, 17-15), during the first day of the Fort Wayne Invitational Presented by Hyatt Place.
Five different players earned a double-double for the Mastodons, as it was the first time in 19 years, as the last time it happened was on Nov. 13, 1998 at home against Quincy in the GLVC Tournament. Those five players were: Deanna Brown, Katie Bruening, Laura Douglas, Star Trahin and Tami Isch.
Elizabeth Fuerst narrowly missed a triple-double, finishing with 13 kills, 12 digs and nine blocks. Sydney Boerst earned her double-double with 12 kills and 11 blocks, the first Mastodons to accomplish that since Maya Schlindwein against IUPUI on Oct. 18, 2008. Katie Crowe had a match-high 19 kills and 13 digs. Nicole Rightnowar finished with 17 kills and 15 digs. Victoria Mills rounded out the double-double quintet with a match-high 53 assists and 12 digs.
Julia Wayer led the 'Dons with a match-high 17 digs on the night while Elizabeth Britner added eight.
The Mastodons led early in the first set, before a five-point run by the Bobcats gave them a 9-7 lead. The 'Dons responded with a 10-4 run to retake the lead for good and win the set. Fort Wayne held a late lead in the second set, but it was Quinnipiac scoring the final four points to tie the match.
It was a similar fate for the 'Dons in the third set, unable to hang on to a late lead as the Bobcats scored five of the final seven points. The Mastodons would not go quietly, battling back in the fourth. Trailing 10-9, Fort Wayne rattled off 10 of the next 11 points to take a 19-11 lead and force the final set.
Things did not start well for the 'Dons as Quinnipiac rattled off five straight points to begin the frame. Fort Wayne refused to give in, answering with five straight of its own. Back-and-forth they went from there as the Mastodons fought off a pair of Bobcat match points. Trailing 15-14, the 'Dons scored the final three points to take the set and the match.
The final day of the Fort Wayne Invitational Presented by Hyatt Place will have the Mastodons taking on SIUE at noon, followed by Toledo at 7:00 p.m.
