Women's Volleyball Splits Final Day of Invitational

ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team split the final day of the Golden Grizzlies Invitational, defeating host Oakland 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-22), before falling to Kent State 3-2 (27-25, 25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 15-14). The Mastodons are now 8-7 on the season.
In the Oakland match, the 'Dons hit a season-high .351. The team also tied a season-high with seven aces. Elizabeth Fuerst led the way for the Mastodons with 10 kills. Nicole Rightnowar had nine kills, while Natalie Seiler and Sydney Boerst each had eight. Katie Crowe topped it off with seven kills.
Madison Jaqua paced the Mastodon offense with 32 assists. Elizabeth Britner led the defensive effort with 10 digs.
Trailing 5-4 in the opening set, Fort Wayne used a 5-0 run to go out in front and win the set. Tied 7-7 in the second, the 'Dons scored three straight to take the lead for good. The final set came down to the wire after four lead changes and 10 tie scores. Knotted at 22-22, the Mastodons scored the final three points on kills from Jaqua and Fuerst, before an Oakland attack error finished off the match.
In the second match of the day, Fuerst and Rightnowar led the way with 14 kills apiece. Rightnowar earned her ninth double-double by adding 10 digs, and for her performance on the weekend was named to the All-Tournament Team. Boerst finished with 13 kills while hitting an astounding .571. Crowe earned her fourth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 16 digs. Seiler also finished in double-digits with 12 kills and a team-high five blocks.
Jaqua earned her third double-double of the year, dishing out a season- and match-high 55 assists and making 18 digs. Britner finished with 14 digs while Victoria Mills had 11.
It was a tough first set against Kent State with four lead changes and 19 ties, but it was the Golden Flashes scoring the final two points to take the opening set. Tied 9-9 in the second, Kent State rattled off 11 of the next 14 points, and winning the set. The third set saw 11 ties and eight lead changes. With the score tied 22-22, the Mastodons got back-to-back kills by Boerst before Fuerst capped off the victory with a kill.
Trailing 9-8 in the fourth, the 'Dons used three 3-0 runs to take a 17-11 lead, and forcing a fifth set. Just as the previous sets, the two teams battled back and forth with three lead changes and eight ties, but this time it was Kent State scoring the final two points to take the match.
