Mastodon Comeback Falls Just Short to Pioneers

DENVER - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team battled back to force a fifth set on the road against Denver, but the Mastodons were unable to pick up the victory, falling 3-2 (25-15, 21-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-10).
Madison Jaqua and Nicole Rightnowar each earned a double-double on the afternoon. Jaqua dished out a match-high 35 assists and added 14 digs. Rightnowar led the 'Dons with 13 kills to go along with 12 digs and a match-high three aces.
Elizabeth Fuerst finished with 11 kills, Lauren Hoffman added nine, while Sydney Boerst and Natalie Seiler each had eight. Seiler also led the Mastodons with three blocks. Elizabeth Britner led all players with 20 digs.
The 'Dons fell behind 7-1 to start the match, as they were unable to overcome the early deficit. It was a different story for the Mastodons in the second set. With the score tied 7-7, Fort Wayne rattled off six consecutive points to take the lead. Denver fought back, tying it at 16-16, but once again the 'Dons used a 4-0 run to win the set. The Mastodons held a lead late in the third set, but the Pioneers ended the frame with a 6-2 run.
Tied 19-19 in the fourth set, Fort Wayne scored six of the next eight points to force a fifth and final set. The 'Dons scored the first point of the final set, but with the score tied 4-4, Denver came up with four of the next five points to take the lead for good.
Fort Wayne returns home to host South Dakota for a league match on September 29 at 7 p.m.
