Wisniewski Scores Twice to Propel Mastodons to Win Over WIU
10/25/2018 9:35:00 PM | Women's Soccer
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Freshman Kayla Wisniewski scored two goals in Purdue Fort Wayne's final match of the season to push the Mastodons past Western Illinois 2-1. The Mastodons never trailed the Leathernecks in their Thursday night (Oct. 25) matchup at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
Wisniewski scored first in the 41st minute, beating her defender and shooting into the top right corner, just past the WIU keeper. She was unassisted after move to beat the defender. When halftime rolled around, the score stood at 1-0.
Zoe Clarke evened the score for Western Illinois in minute 68 after turning to beat the defending 'Dons, but it didn't take long for Purdue Fort Wayne to answer. After a yellow card was attributed to WIU inside the box, Wisniewski took the role of the penalty kick in minute 74. After a slow walk up to the ball, she ripped her attempt into the bottom left corner and took the lead back. This was her eighth goal of the season, just one goal shy of breaking into the program's top 10 in career goals scored through just her freshman season.
It only took seven shots (three on goal) for the Mastodons to take the victory. Western Illinois ended the night with 23 shots with nine on goal. Lorah Pund had three saves and Haley Lydon had four.
This was the first time that Purdue Fort Wayne won the regular season finale since 2012.
Purdue Fort Wayne finishes the season 4-12-3, 1-7-0 Summit League. Head coach Jason Burr ends his fifth season with his best winning percentage at Purdue Fort Wayne. Western Illinois falls to 3-13-1, 0-7-0.
