FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne women's soccer team head coach Jason Burr announced the signing of two student-athletes on Wednesday (Feb. 7). Emily Gunsett, Makenzie Coe and Emily Melchi will join the Fort Wayne program, and will be eligible to compete for the 2018 season.
Gunsett (Defender - 5-6 - Decatur, Ind./Bellmont High School - Morehead State University - Fort Wayne United FC) joins the Mastodons after spending one season at Morehead State, where she competed in 18 matches and earned eight starts. She had a career-high 110 minutes against Tennessee Tech in her only season for the Eagles in 2016. She will be a sophomore for the 2018 season. At Bellmont, she was an All-Conference selection in 2013, 2014, 2015. Her father Paul wrestled for two years at Purdue.
Coe (Defensive Midfielder - 5-6 - St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lake Shore High School - Nationals Union Black) comes to Fort Wayne after three years of varsity for David Lount. The Shorian earned All-Conference selections for the 2016 and 2017 seasons. She was All-District in 2017, and won the Defensive Most Valuable Player distinction in 2017. In the classroom, Coe was selected for Academic All-Conference in 2016 and 2017. She was also selected for the National Honor Society and was the Key Club president.
Melchi (Goalkeeper - 5-5 - Carmel Ind./Carmel High School - FC Pride ECNL) joins the Fort Wayne squad after playing three years of varsity soccer under Frank Dixon at Carmel High School. She led the Greyhounds to a 15-2-2 record in her senior season, including two victories in Carmel's sectional matches against Zionsville and Brebeuf. Melchi will join her brother as collegiate student-athletes, as he plays football at Wabash College.
"Gunsett came home to be with us and Mak and Melchi are so committed to this university and soccer program that I know our team is getting better today with the addition of these three unbelievable student-athletes," Burr said.
Fort Wayne will begin the 2018 regular season in mid-August.
