Mastodons Drop Season Opener to Sycamores

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped its season opener to Indiana State 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-23). The match closed out the first day of the Purdue Fort Wayne Invitational Presented by Hyatt Place.
Nicole Rightnowar and Elizabeth Fuerst led the Mastodons with a match-high 15 kills. Rightnowar finished with 11 digs to earn her 45th career double-double. Katie Crowe had 12 kills on the night for the 'Dons. Madison Jaqua led all players with 47 assists in the match. Elizabeth Britner also had a match-high with 14 digs.
The 'Dons led most of the first set, before a late rally by the Sycamores gave them the frame. The Mastodons fought back from a 4-0 deficit to begin the second set, to take a 22-21 lead. The 'Dons were unable to hang on as Indiana State scored the final two points. In the third, the Mastodons took the early lead, but a 5-1 run by the Sycamores gave them the lead for good.
The 'Dons finished the match with 12 more kills (56-44) than Indiana State. In the final set, 21 of the 23 Mastodon points came on kills.
Purdue Fort Wayne returns to action tomorrow, August 25, for the final day of its invitational. The Mastodons host Liberty at 11 a.m. before closing out the weekend against Oakland at 7 p.m.
