Mastodons Topple Dukes

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team took care of Duquesne in its opening match of the RMU Sheraton Innvitational, sweeping the Dukes 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-19).
Nicole Rightnowar earned her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with a match-high 18 kills and 12 digs. Elizabeth Fuerst hit a superb .600 on the match, finishing with 13 kills and only one error. She also had a match-high three blocks. Madison Jaqua led the Mastodons with a match-high 36 assists. Elizabeth Britner tied a match-high with 12 digs, while Katie Crowe finished with 11.
For the afternoon, the 'Dons led the Dukes 49-28 in kills, and hit .346 as a team compared to .132 for Duquesne.
Although the Dukes scored the opening point of the match, the Mastodons never trailed again in the first set. Tied 8-8, the 'Dons used a 4-0 run to extend a lead as Duquesne was never close again. Tied 17-17 in the second set, the Mastodons capped off the frame out-scoring Duquesne 8-3, including the final four points. The 'Dons jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the third, before the Dukes came back to take a 9-8 advantage. The Mastodons came rumbling back with four straight points, before capping off the rally with a 12-4 run to take the match.
Purdue Fort Wayne returns to action tomorrow, September 15, at 4 p.m. against host Robert Morris to wrap up the RMU Sheraton Innvitational.
