Mastodons Drop Hard Fought Match to Crusaders

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped a hard fought five-set match to Valparaiso, 3-2 (25-17, 13-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-9).
Three Mastodons earned a double-double in the match, while five players finished with double-digit digs. Nicole Rightnowar had a match-high 19 kills and added 17 digs, for her eighth double-double of the season. Katie Crowe finished with a career- and team-high 22 digs and five blocks to go along with 15 kills for her fourth double-double of the year. Madison Jaqua led the team with 42 assists and finished with a season-high 17 digs for her fifth double-double.
Elizabeth Fuerst finished her night with 12 kills and Sydney Boerst added nine. Defensively, Elizabeth Britner had a season-high 19 digs. Victoria Mills came off the bench to finish with 14 digs.
Both teams had multiple leads in the opening set, but with the score tied 16-16, the Crusaders went on a 6-0 run to take the opening frame. The Mastodons dominated from the start of the second set, putting it out of reach thanks to an 11-3 stretch. With the score tied 18-18 in the third, Valparaiso used a 5-1 advantage to take the lead. The Mastodons fought off a couple of set points, but Valpo was able to score the final point.
Leading by one, 12-11 in the fourth, the Mastodons went on an 8-3 run to extend its lead. Valparaiso cut into the deficit, but the 'Dons scored the final four points to force a fifth set. The 'Dons jumped out to a quick lead in the fifth, but they were unable to contain the Crusaders, as they went on a 7-0 to take the set and the match.
Purdue Fort Wayne opens Summit League play September 23 when it hosts North Dakota at 1 p.m.
