Three Players Earn Double-Double, But 'Dons Fall to Yotes

VERMILLION, S.D. - Although it was a night of season, and even career, highs for several Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball players, the Mastodons dropped a heartbreaker on the road. The 'Dons fell in five sets to South Dakota 3-2 (25-20, 19-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-9)
Three Purdue Fort Wayne players finished with a double-double. Nicole Rightnowar had a career- and match high 27 digs and a season- and match-high 23 kills. She is the first Mastodon to have a 20-20 performance since Oct. 18, 2016. Katie Crowe had a season-high 17 kills to go along with 20 digs. Madison Jaqua dished out a season- and match-high 57 assists and finished with 13 digs.
Sydney Boerst hit a match-high .435 and had 12 kills and a career-high eight digs. Je'Bria Green had a career-high eight kills. Elizabeth Britner had a season- and match-high 27 digs.
After the Mastodons scored the opening point of the match, the Coyotes responded with five straight as the 'Dons were unable to overcome the early deficit. The Mastodons again scored the first point of the set, but this time, they were able to use an early 6-1 run to their advantage to take the frame.
The two sides traded multiple leads in the opening points of the third. It came down to the wire as the teams traded leads late into the set, but it was Purdue Fort Wayne coming from behind to score three straight points and win the set.
The Mastodons fell behind early in the fourth, before four straight points gave them an 8-6 lead. The Yotes used a 5-0 run, and scored eight of the next nine to pull ahead. The 'Dons countered with a 4-0 run to knot the set at 19-19, but it was USD scoring three of the final four points to force a fifth and final set. South Dakota opened with the first two points as the Mastodons could not make a final comeback.
