MACOMB, Ill. - A comeback by the Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball team came up just shy of fruition, as the Mastodons nearly eliminated an 18-point deficit before falling to Western Illinois 73-59, Saturday night (Jan. 19).
The 'Dons were led by Hannah Albrecht with a season-high 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting, and knocking down a trio of shots from beyond the arc. De'Jour Young earned her sixth career double-double, and second of the season, as she finished with 13 points and tied a career-high with 14 rebounds. Hannah Hess came off the bench to finish in double-digits with 11 points to go along with tying a career-high seven boards. Sh'Toya Sanders had a season-high five blocks, while grabbing nine rebounds.
Purdue Fort Wayne finished the game with 55 rebounds, the second-most in the team's Division I era. The 55 rebounds were the most since the 'Dons grabbed 58 rebounds against Wright State on Nov. 24, 2004.
The Mastodons led for the first five minutes of the game, leading by as many as four. With the 'Dons leading 13-9, Western Illinois capped off the first quarter with a 17-3 advantage. Purdue Fort Wayne trailed by double-digits for most of the game, before mounting a comeback in the fourth quarter. The Mastodons cut the deficit to four points, thanks to a 7-0 run to begin the final period. That would be as close as the 'Dons would get, as the Leathernecks answered with a 9-1 run to put the game away.
