John Konchar Sets Program Scoring Record In OT Loss To Omaha

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – John Konchar entered Thursday's (Jan. 24) game with Omaha needing exactly 15 points to pass Frank Gaines to become the all-time leading scorer in program history. Konchar scored exactly 15 points to get the record, but it came in an 85-79 overtime loss to Omaha at the Gates Sports Center.
Gaines finished his Mastodon career with 1,841 points from 2009-13. Konchar tied and passed Gaines with two free throws in overtime. Konchar now owns 1,842 points.
The Mastodons pushed the game to overtime after a 3-pointer by Kason Harrell with 29 seconds left tied the game at 65. Omaha called timeout but Mitch Hahn's basket with four seconds remaining was no good.
Overtime saw the 'Dons lead on three separate occasions, including Konchar's free throws which put the 'Dons up 72-70 with 3:34 left. JT Gibson responded with a trey to put the Mavericks up 73-72. Down 75-72, Matt Holba connected on a 3-pointer to tie the game again with 2:26 left. Dylan Carl tied the game at 77 on a layup with 1:45 left and then Harrell knotted it at 79 with 59 seconds on the clock. Harrell's basket would be Purdue Fort Wayne's final points. Omaha scored the final six points of the game to ice the contest.
Harrell finished with a team-high 16 points. Konchar totaled 15 points, nine assists and four rebounds. Holba hit double-digits with 10.
Zach Jackson led the Mavericks with 25 points, scoring 24 after halftime.
Omaha improves to 12-8 (6-1 Summit League). The Mastodons fall to 12-10 (4-3 Summit League).
The 'Dons are back in action on Saturday (Jan. 26) vs. Denver. It will be homecoming at the Gates Sports Center.
