Mastodons Drop Sunday Contest to South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Despite 19 digs from Rachael Crucis, Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball dropped a three-set match against South Dakota 25-22, 25-11, 26-24 at the Pentagon on Sunday (Oct. 20)
South Dakota jumped out to an early lead, but a block from Katie Crowe brought the Mastodons within one at 14-13 and forced a USD timeout. Crowe had a kill to even the opening set at 20 after the 'Dons trailed by two. The Mastodons staved off a set point, but the Coyotes took the subsequent point. Crucis had eight digs in the first set alone.
The second set was all Coyotes, as they used a team hitting percentage of .438 to dismantle the Mastodons' defense. In the last set of the night, Purdue Fort Wayne built an early lead as large as seven that held until late at 24-23, but South Dakota took the last three points of the match to secure the victory.
Crowe finished with 10 kills to lead the Mastodons. Madison Gates recorded a double-double with 13 digs and 11 assists.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 12-10, 6-2 Summit League, while South Dakota remains undefeated in League play at 19-1, 8-0. The Mastodons are back in action on Tuesday, when they visit Western Illinois, which is coming off a three-set loss to Denver this afternoon.
