WVB's Balanced Attack Gets it Done at Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. - Behind a balanced attack, Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball grinded out a five-set win over Western Illinois 24-26, 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 15-10 in Western Hall. The Mastodons had four attackers reaching double-digit kills with Elizabeth Fuerst (16), Sidney Schiller (13), Madelyn Wurster (12) and Katie Crowe (11) on Tuesday night (Oct. 22).
Schiller and Crowe recorded double-doubles in the 'Dons' win. Schiller notched 13 kills and 10 digs, while Crowe had 11 kills and a match-high 18 digs.
Western Illinois jumped out to an early lead at 8-4, but Purdue Fort Wayne went on a seven-point run that forced a Leatherneck timeout. Back-and-forth runs knotted the Leathernecks and Mastodons at 23. The 'Dons had a set point opportunity at 24-23, but WIU took the last three points of the opening frame.
After a 9-9 tie in the second set, the Mastodons went on a 12-4 push that put the set out of reach. Sydney Boerst had an ace that put the exclamation point on the set.
The 'Dons went up 20-14 in the second, but Western Illinois brought it within one at 21-20. The 'Dons took the last three straight kills from Schiller, Boerst and Wurster.
The fourth set was heavy in the Leathernecks favor for the majority of the frame, as they went up 21-15 and held off a small push from the 'Dons to end the set.
The Mastodons used a 5-1 run after a 5-5 tie in the fifth to force a Western Illinois timeout. Crowe had an ace in this run. After the 'Dons called a timeout of their own at 10-8, they went on a 5-2 push that concluded the match. Wurster had the final kill of the night, with a blast from the right side into WIU's libero's face and into the crowd.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 13-10, 7-2 Summit League, while Western Illinois falls to 5-17, 2-7. The Mastodons have a road test at Denver on Friday (Oct. 25) before returning home for five of their last six matches.
