Denver Takes Rematch from Purdue Fort Wayne
10/25/2019 11:00:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
DENVER - Denver took a 3-1 (25-9, 23-25, 25-19, 25-23) win over Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball in Friday's (Oct. 25) rematch from earlier this season. In September, the Mastodons defeated Denver in four sets in Fort Wayne.
The first set was all Denver, as after taking a 7-4 lead, the Pioneers went on a 18-5 run. Purdue Fort Wayne responded in the second set by opening the frame with a 13-4 start that paved the way. The Pioneers went on an 8-3 run to bring it within four, but kills from Sydney Boerst, Madelyn Wurster and Sandra Hoevels got the Mastodons the set. It took the 'Dons four set point opportunities, but Hoevels put one away before the Pioneers could tie it at 24.
In set three, the Mastodons used a 5-0 run to go up 10-9, but Denver used a 9-1 spurt that put the set out of reach for the Mastodons.
In the fourth, the Pioneers jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the 'Dons went on a 3-0 run to even it up after a pair of kills from Wurster and Katie Crowe. After an 11-all tie, Hoevels had a kill and a block in a 3-0 run that forced a Denver timeout. Later on, Wurster had a block and Boerst had a solo block that put the 'Dons on a 3-0 run to go up 19-16 and force Denver's timeout. Immediately after the timeout, Sidney Schiller had a solo block to put an exclamation point on the run. While the 'Dons had the lead, it did not last to the end as the Pioneers used a 9-3 run to close the match.
Purdue Fort Wayne out-blocked Denver 10-4. Rachael Crucis led the floor with 19 digs. Crowe led the Mastodons with 10 kills, followed by Hoevels' eight on a .467 hitting clip. Boerst had five kills and five blocks.
The Mastodons fall to 13-11, 7-3 Summit League, while Denver improves to 15-6, 7-2 Summit League. The 'Dons and Pioneers swap places in the League standings, with Purdue Fort Wayne moving into third and Denver moving up to second. The Mastodons are back in action on Friday, November 1 back in Fort Wayne, when they welcome North Dakota State for the annual Pink Out game on Arnie Ball Court.
