11/1/2019 9:43:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind a .303 team hitting percentage on Pink Out, Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball earned a 3-1 win (25-10, 20-25, 25-18, 25-23) over North Dakota State on Arnie Ball Court. The Mastodons improved to 8-3 on Friday (Nov. 1) in their final season in the Summit League.
Friday's match was the 12th annual Pink Out, benefiting the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer.
The opening set was all Mastodons, as they hit a blistering .424 as a team, while holding NDSU to a -.029 clip. The match started on an 8-1 push by the 'Dons, with six kills and a pair of blocks. A 6-0 run under Sidney Schiller's serve put the 'Dons up 19-6, and four straight behind Katie Crowe put the exclamation point on the set. Crowe had an ace and Schiller picked up her fourth kill on the 24th and 25th points.
In the second, NDSU used a 4-1 run to go up 14-8 before the Mastodons ran off four straight. Schiller had three kills in this stretch. After reaching an 18-all stymie, North Dakota State rattled off seven of the last nine to even the match at a set each. By this point, Schiller had eight kills on 13 swings.
The following frame looked similar to the first, but Sydney Boerst was the biggest attacking threat, going 4-0-5 in the set. A 9-3 start set the tone for the third, and an 8-2 push later on put the 'Dons up eight. The Bison went back-and-forth with the Mastodons the rest of the way, but the 'Dons held on to lead 2-1. Rachael Crucis led the back line with nine of her 24 digs in the third set alone.
The fourth and final set was the closest of the night, as there were 10 ties, but only two lead changes. After an 8-8 start, the two teams traded points for the next 20, as neither team held onto a lead larger than two. Madelyn Wurster and Crowe changed this, as they both slammed down a kill that gave the 'Dons a three-point lead at 22-19. Wurster, Elizabeth Fuerst and Schiller each had a kill in the final push that gave the 'Dons the win. Purdue Fort Wayne hit .395 as a team in the fourth, banging home 19 kills.
Crowe (15 kills, 13 digs), Schiller (14 kills, 14 digs), Madison Gates (26 assists, 11 digs) and Crucis (24 digs, 12 assists) all notched double-doubles. This was Crucis' first-career double-double.
The Mastodons improve to 14-11 overall, keeping hold of the third-place slot in the Summit League standings at 8-3. North Dakota State falls to 10-13, 5-6 Summit League. Purdue Fort Wayne will take Arnie Ball Court again on Sunday, when they welcome the North Dakota Fighting Hawks. The 'Dons defeated UND 3-0 in Grand Forks, North Dakota earlier this season.
