Mastodons Clinch League Tournament Berth with Win Over UND

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Madelyn Wurster led the floor with a career-high 19 kills in Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball's 3-1 win (25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 25-11) over North Dakota on Sunday (Nov. 3). With the win today, Purdue Fort Wayne officially clinches a berth into the Summit League Tournament with four matches left in the regular season.
The Mastodons have won all six matchups against North Dakota in the series history.
The Mastodons opened the day with an 8-3 run capped off by Kendyll Gebert's ace to force a North Dakota timeout. UND answered by going up 11-9, but the 'Dons had a four-point swing later on to go up 18-16. Wurster finished off the set with two kills in the final four points.
North Dakota led early on the second set 8-7, but Purdue Fort Wayne rattled off 11 of 14 points, including three blocks and three kills from both Wurster and Katie Crowe. The two squads traded points until 21-16 'Dons, then Purdue Fort Wayne had a 3-0 run with three straight kills from Wurster. She had eight of the team's 20 kills in the second set.
The Mastodons came up with an 18-10 lead in the third, but North Dakota went on a 12-2 run that gave the Fighting Hawks the advantage and the ability to keep the match going.
The fourth set was all 'Dons, as they started off the set up 18-6. They hit a scorching .421 with 19 kills for the frame. Wurster capped off her career night with her 19th kill to end the match. She hit .469 for the afternoon.
Crowe (15 kills, 18 digs), Sidney Schiller (13 kills, 10 digs) and Madison Gates (29 assists, 14 digs) all notched double-doubles. Rachael Crucis dug out 22 attacks to lead the floor.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 15-11, 9-3 Summit League and moves into a tie for second place in the League with Denver, while North Dakota falls to 3-9 and is on the outside looking in at a Summit League Tournament berth. The 'Dons are back in action again on Friday (Nov. 8) at the Gates Sports Center, as they welcome the Omaha Mavericks to Arnie Ball Court at 7 p.m.
