Mastodons Stomp Purdue Northwest in Season Opener
11/5/2019 10:26:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Thanks to a double-double from Sh'Toya Sanders, Purdue Fort Wayne opened the 2019-20 season with a convincing 73-50 win over Purdue Northwest on Tuesday (Nov. 5) at the Gates Sports Center.
Sanders earned her third-career double-double after a 17-point, 10-rebound game against the Pride. She snagged her 10th rebound in the fourth quarter at the 8:23 mark. Freshman Riley Ott led the floor with 18 points in her first collegiate outing.
The Mastodons opened the game with a pair of buckets from Ott before fellow freshman Shayla Sellers dropped in the 'Dons only 3-point attempt of the opening quarter. The Mastodons had their best scoring run of the night then, and it was capped off by a made jumper from Hannah Albrecht in the paint. Purdue Fort Wayne had only one turnover in the first quarter, and forced seven from Purdue Northwest.
The 'Dons extended the lead to as large as 13 after Sanders converted a pair of free throws the end the period, as she was fouled with less than a second left on the clock. This allowed the 'Dons to take a 41-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Sanders had nine points in the third quarter with a pair of post moves and a jumper just outside the paint. She also had all three of her blocks in the first five minutes of the quarter. The lead ballooned to 18 at the 4:44 mark after Sanders dropped in a free throw. The lead fluctuated as Purdue Northwest went on a small run, but the 'Dons responded and ended the frame on a layup from Ott that pushed the differential back to 18. The lead reached its final line of 23 when Jazzy Hughes buried a layup with 1:08 remaining. She had five of her 10 points in the fourth quarter to lead the 'Dons.
The Mastodons had just eight turnovers, which would have been a season-low a year ago. Purdue Fort Wayne forced 18 Purdue Northwest turnovers. The 'Dons held the Pride to 36 percent shooting from the field and 18.8 percent from deep.
The Mastodons improve to 1-0, while Purdue Northwest remains at 0-0, as the game was played as an exhibition contest for the Pride. The 'Dons will take the court again on Thursday, as they welcome the UIC Flames, who will be competing in their first regular-season game of the year. Tip is set for 11 a.m., as Purdue Fort Wayne hosts the eighth annual Fitness Day for elementary schools in the Fort Wayne area. More than 1,000 elementary students are expected to come to the game and participate in yoga, exercise minutes, and a fitness obstacle.
