'Dons Defeat Western Illinois, Split Day One of Match Play

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf team went 1-1 during the opening day of the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge. The Mastodons fell in the opening match to Eastern Michigan 5-0, before coming back in the afternoon to defeat Summit League rival Western Illinois 3-2.
Hosted by Bowling Green at the Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club: Royal Lakes Course, the par-72 course is being played at 6,068 yards.
In the win over Western Illinois, the 'Dons picked up victories by Paige Bird, Emma Schroeder, and Abigail Carlsen. All three earned victories by scores of 4&3. Bird never trailed in her No. 5 match against Emily Marrs. Schroeder won the final four holes at the No. 4 pairings to secure her victory over Katy Schmitt. Carlsen trailed by two holes on the front nine before earning the comeback victory at the No. 2 position by winning four of the final six holes. Holly Anderson dropped her No. 1 match 2&1, while Linnzie Richner also fell 2&1 at the No. 3 matchup.
In the morning matchup with the Eagles, Bird put up a fight all the way to the final hole, falling 1-up to Julia Stevenson. Anderson dropped her match 3&2, while Carlsen dropped her matchup 7&6. Richner fell 3&1 and Schroder was defeated 8&7.
Purdue Fort Wayne takes on Ohio tomorrow, February 5, at 9 a.m. for the final matchup of the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge.
