9/24/2019 7:46:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Fresh off her Summit League Offensive Player of the Week, Katie Crowe notched a double-double in Purdue Fort Wayne's 3-0 (25-25, 25-14, 25-21) win over Western Illinois on Tuesday (Sept. 24). The junior recorded 11 kills (11-3-25) and 10 digs for her seventh double-double of the year.
After Western Illinois took the first two points of the match, Purdue Fort Wayne ran off seven straight points behind Crowe. She picked up one of her two aces in this run. The Mastodon lead ballooned to the final margin of 10 after a four-point run to end the set. Crowe had two kills in the run that put the set away. The 'Dons stifled the Leathernecks' attack, holding them to a -.056 hitting percentage in the opening frame.
The Mastodons led the second set in true wire-to-wire fashion, never holding a tie with the Leathernecks apart from 0-0. A 7-0 run to start the set behind Madison Gates' service put the Mastodons out of reach. She had a pair of her three aces in the first seven points of the second. Madelyn Wurster and Crowe had back-to-back kills to head into the break up two sets.
Western Illinois held much closer in the third set, as there were nine ties and five lead changes. The Leathernecks held a 21-20 lead before a crucial Mastodon substitution. Alexandra Traciak came off the bench to serve, and knocked in three straight aces to but the 'Dons up 22-21. The Leathernecks called a timeout, but did not score again.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 7-8, 1-0 Summit League while Western Illinois falls to 3-11, 0-1 Summit League. The Mastodons are back on Arnie Ball Court on Friday (Sept. 27) with a match against Denver at 7 p.m.
