Mastodon WVB Beats Summit League Favorite Denver
9/27/2019 10:06:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - After a hot offensive start on Friday (Sept. 27), the Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team defeated Summit League favorite Denver 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 15-25, 25-19) on Arnie Ball Court.
This was Purdue Fort Wayne's first win over Denver since 2016. This is the first time Denver has ever started the Summit League schedule 0-1 since joining the League in 2013.
The Mastodons hit over .300 in the opening two sets, both of which they won to take a 2-0 advantage heading into the break. Denver started the match up 4-0, but Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 7-1 run that forced a pair of Pioneer timeouts, and gave the 'Dons the 15-10 edge. Sydney Boerst rattled off a 4-0 run under her service that put the 'Dons out of reach at 23-14. Elizabeth Fuerst hammered down one of her five kills to end the opening frame. Purdue Fort Wayne used a five-point run in the second set to force Denver into a timeout at 12-7. Madelyn Wurster connected on a pair of kills on either side of the TO. Late in the set, a Denver miscue on a free ball gave Rachael Crucis a kill that put the 'Dons within two of the set. Katie Crowe had one of her match-high 17 kills just moments later on the penultimate point of the second.
Denver returned from the break down two sets and came out with some fire, going up 9-4 to force an early Mastodon timeout. The Pioneers used three three-point runs to put the third out of reach and continue the match. DU ended the set on three straight kills.
The Mastodons bounced back after they switched sides for the third time, knocking in a pair of aces in a 5-1 start. Crowe and Crucis both had one of the 'Dons' seven aces in this stretch. Once the Mastodons regained the momentum and the energy of the crowd, digs began to come in bunches, including a one-handed up from Crucis that allowed Boerst to connect on a kill to go up 7-2. Boerst went back to serve shortly after that kill and aced the Pioneers to lead 11-4 and force a second TO. Denver bullied its way back into the set with one 3-0 and two 4-0 runs, closing the gap to just one at 20-19. The Mastodons, however, refused to let the Pioneers score again, as they ended the match with a sequence of five straight points in: Wurster block (21-19), back-to-back Crowe kills (23-19), Sandra Hoevels and Fuerst block (24-19) and another Crowe kill (25-19).
The Mastodons ended the night leading in kills (57-43), aces (7-3), assists (55-40) and digs (63-54). Crucis had a match-high 20 digs to lead the Mastodon back line, followed by Sidney Schiller, who packed in a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 8-8, 2-0 Summit League while Denver falls to 8-5, 0-1. Next week, the Mastodons will begin the toughest stretch of the season, with seven of the next eight matches on the road. That will begin on Friday, October 4 and Sunday, October 6 when the 'Dons head to North Dakota State and North Dakota.
