Mastodons Deal With Purple Aces at Miami Invitational

OXFORD, Ohio - The Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball team split its first day at the Miami/Best Western Invitational on Friday (Sept. 4), falling 3-1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-16) to Kansas City before picking up a 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-13) victory over Evansville.
Purdue Fort Wayne 1, Kansas City 3 (17-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-16)
The Mastodon defense stifled Kansas City in the first set, as the 'Dons held the Roos to a -.033 hitting percentage. Meanwhile offensively, Trinity Rye and Riley Rosneck were cooking, recording six and five kills each. The 'Dons had a 5-0 run to go up 1-0, which included two kills from Rye and one from Miona Dimitric.
From there though, Kansas City figured out the Mastodons' strategies to hit positive the rest of the match and held the 'Dons under .115.
In the third set, the Mastodons put together a 4-0 run to tie the frame at 22 with a block from Mya Plemons and Avery Parris, but the Roos were able to take the next three points. In the fourth, Kansas City jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back.
Rosneck finished with a team-high 12 kills. Rye and Dimitric added 11 each. Becky Barrett had a match-high 17 digs.
Kansas City improved to 3-1.
Purdue Fort Wayne 3, Evansville 0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-13)
The afternoon match was the Rye show. She put together a 19-kill performance with nine in the first set alone.
The 'Dons hit .351, their highest of the season. Lili Smith dished out 45 assists as the primary setter in the match.
After the 'Dons went up 12-7 in the first set with kills from Rosneck and Bella DiBuono, Evansville chipped away at that lead and eventually tied it at 17. The 'Dons pushed back with a 4-0 run, but the Purple Aces clawed back to tie it at 23 and 24. Dimitric's kill and an attack error from Makenzie Miller gave the 'Dons an early lead.
In the second, another early lead got the Mastodons on the right foot. They went up 10-4 on a kill from Plemons. Like in the first, Evansville brought it back within one at 16-15, but Plemons and Rosneck combined for four kills in the next five points. The 'Dons held the Purple Aces to a .000 hitting clip in the second set.
The third set was all Mastodons. Dimitric had a kill and ace midway through the set to snag a 13-4 advantage. There was no fight left in Evansville, and Dimitric won the match on an ace that clipped the net to drop into the court. The 'Dons hit a scorching .459 in the final frame.
Rye racked up 19 kills and Rosneck added 11. Rosneck had 10 digs too for a double-double. Barrett added 15 digs.
Evansville fell to 0-6. With the split, Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 3-3.
The Mastodons will play the host Miami (OH) squad on Saturday (Sept. 5) at 3 p.m.
