'Dons Complete Five-Set Comeback Against UC Riverside

SAN FRANCISCO - Purdue Fort Wayne women's volleyball's completed a five-set comeback against UC Riverside on Saturday (Sept. 7), as the Mastodons won 7-25, 23-25, 25-23, 29-27, 16-14 in the Sobrato Center.
UC Riverside took the first set thanks to an 11-point run behind Victoria Bachawati's serve. The Mastodons led 16-14 in the second set, shortly after Madison Gates aced the Highlanders. The 'Dons led 22-21 after a 3-0 run behind Katie Crowe, but UC Riverside had a 4-1 run that gave the Highlanders the set.
The Highlanders led 15-12 in the third set, but the 'Dons responded with a 3-0 run to tie it at 15. Purdue Fort Wayne scored five of the last seven points to keep the match alive. Elizabeth Fuerst had a pair of kills in this run.
Crowe notched a double-double in the middle of the fourth set. She had her 10th kill in a 3-0 run that forced a UC Riverside timeout. Crowe had already recorded 14 of her 15 digs by that time. Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 4-0 run after the Highlanders took a four-point lead. At 21-21, the two teams traded two-point runs to go to 23-all. The Highlanders had a match point at 24-23, but the 'Dons responded with two straight. Sidney Schiller and Sandra Hoevels blocked a ball that put the Mastodons up 27-26, then UC Riverside had two unforced errors that pushed the match into the fifth set.
In the fifth, UC Riverside rattled off four straight to go up 4-2, and led 12-9 later on. Under Maddi Nell's serve, the 'Dons rallied back with a 5-0 run to go up 14-12. The Highlanders had two in a row to tie it at 14, but Fuerst had a kill to give the 'Dons a match point. The Highlanders' attack error gave the Mastodons the match.
Fuerst led the team with 13 kills, followed by Madelyn Wurster and Crowe who had 12 each. Rachael Crucis led the defense with 23 digs. Sidney Schiller had seven blocks, followed by Sydney Boerst who had six. Gates finished with her fourth double-double of the season with 20 assists and 10 digs.
The 'Dons improve to 2-4, while UC Riverside falls to 3-3. Purdue Fort Wayne returns home for a Tuesday (Sept. 10) match with future Horizon League rival IUPUI at 7 p.m. on Arnie Ball Court.
